Utilizing OCR/ICR with Extensive Rules-based, Machine Learning Techniques

With a sizable number of insurance payers still sending paper documents to healthcare providers, ReMedics helps our clients to convert their paper EOBs to ANSI standard 835 electronic files. One of the many technology tools that ReMedics uses in automating its data conversion processes is an advanced form of optical character recognition (OCR) and intelligent character recognition (ICR). What makes it ‘advanced’ is the extensive rules-based, machine learning processes that we utilize to verify the accuracy on the conversion.

With the text being extracted and mapped to corresponding 835 fields, we then check for certain types of characters (or number of characters) in specific alpha-numeric sequences. We can also compare certain data fields with other sources and applications such as the spelling of a last name, patient ID or date of birth. If any extracted data doesn’t meet certain criteria or match a previously verified record, it is then flagged for review and editing by our staff to correct the questionable information.

Since ReMedics utilizes a centralized platform for collecting data that is then injected into multiple other systems, some would compare our conversion processes to ETL — an acronym for Extract, Transform and Load.
